Notre Dame University-Louaize, Shouf Campus (NDU-SC) celebrated its 16th anniversary on Friday, June 9, 2017. Exploring India – the theme of the celebration – had the entire Mar Abda quad transform into a foray into Indian culture, food, dance, arts and of course spices. The Taj Mahal, constructed with much hard work, stood majestically under the Deir El Kamar moon and led into the Indian market – facing it was the stage that paid tribute to Indian dancing and art. As the smell of Indian food swept through the air, the curry, Naan bread and yoghurt were simply irresistible.
Guest of honor, Mr. Ajay Singh, representing the Indian Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr. Sanjeev Arora praised the celebration and commended the university’s effort in bringing cultures closer together and for showing the beauty that resides within cultures. While stressing the prosperous relations between India and Lebanon, Mr. Singh invited the attendees to make use of the activities offered by the Indian embassy in Lebanon.
Prominent guests attending the event included former Minister Mr. Naji al-Bustany; Dr. Nasser Zaidan, representing Mr. Taymour Jumblatt, head of the Progressive Socialist Party; Dr. Walid Safi, Mayor of Deir al-Kamar; Ambassador Melhem Misto; Rina Shibani, Miss Lebanon 2012 and Ms. Romi Shibani, the first runner up as well as a host of military, political and spiritual leaders.
In his welcoming speech, Fr. Hanna Tayar, Director of NDU-SC, thanked the guests, NDU faculty, staff, students and visitors for joining the Founders’ Day celebration. “NDU-SC is a meeting point, a unanimous agreement on the importance of education, that transcends political and religious differences,” said Fr. Tayar. “It is one of the many initiatives that remind us of what we share as Lebanese people unified by our love for our country, for education and for each other – we continue to grow and prosper because of this love.” Fr. Tayar then invited everyone to enjoy the evening.
The ceremony included honoring the legend Wadih El Safi, in the presence of his son, renowned singer George El Safi. Live performances by George El Safi, George Al-Rassi, Ghassan Al-Rahbany, Anthony Touma, and Omar Jad brought the night to life with upbeat music, dancing and much much fun.
