DR. TALAL SALEM ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS - LEBANON SECTION

The Chairperson of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), Dr. Talal Salem, was recently elected as President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) – Lebanon Section.

As a global professional organization representing over 160,000 members across 177 countries, ASCE is committed to the advancement of civil engineering through professional development, technical resources, advocacy, and the promotion of sustainable infrastructure worldwide. Established in 1852, it stands as the oldest national engineering society in the United States.

In his new role, Dr. Salem will be leading the 500-member local section over a two-year term spanning from 2025 to 2026, guiding its activities and initiatives locally while strengthening relations with the headquarters in Reston, and with other ASCE regions globally. As president, he will focus on supporting the growth of the civil engineering profession and education in Lebanon by organizing targeted events, seminars, and competitions that help connect students, educators, and professionals, while encouraging innovation and collaboration.

As for what it means to Dr. Salem himself, the newly elected president stated that this embodies “a significant professional milestone in his career.” He added that it reflects the trust and support of members who represent leading engineering companies and top universities across Lebanon. Reflecting on this achievement, Dr. Salem reiterated how it strengthens his efforts to advance the engineering profession locally and internationally. Professionally, it offers a unique platform to drive collaboration, innovation, and leadership among civil engineers in Lebanon, and to contribute actively to the global vision of ASCE.

When asked about his vision for the Lebanon Section, Dr. Salem emphasized the importance of aligning global connections with local impact. “I believe in creating opportunities for our young members to share knowledge, participate in regional and global initiatives, and bring innovative ideas back to Lebanon”, he noted. “By staying active internationally and working closely together here at home, we can grow stronger and make a real impact.”

Landing a prestigious leadership position is not uncharted territory for Dr. Salem, however. Serving as the Chairperson of NDU’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, the now-president highlighted how this new position naturally complements his academic mission and role at NDU. Through ASCE Lebanon Section, Dr. Salem can increase networking opportunities for students and young professionals and keep them informed of the latest trends. As he explains it, this could potentially strengthen the link between academic learning and professional practice, as well as help better prepare students for real-world challenges and international opportunities.

In terms of concrete measures that will be put in place to ensure that such opportunities are secured, Dr. Salem opened up about his plans to organize events that bring students and professionals together, like workshops, mentorship programs, and site visits during his two-year presidency. More importantly, Dr. Salem discussed his aim to create an environment where young engineers feel motivated, valued, and excited to be part of ASCE.

As Dr. Salem takes on this new chapter of leadership, NDU celebrates not just the title, but the spirit of service and ambition it represents. His election reflects the University’s core ideals: purpose-driven expertise, principled leadership, and an education that resonates far beyond the boundaries of the classroom. Dr. Salem’s success is shared by the entire NDU community, whose values and support continue to inspire his path forward.
