The Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities at Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), cordially invites you to an interdisciplinary online seminar on "Faith in Science" by Professor Paul Ewart, Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford, UK. The seminar will take place on March 4, 2024, at 12:30 pm.

Abstract:

In today's discourse, there is often perceived conflict between science and belief in God, with some arguing that science relies on evidence while religious faith is upheld in the absence of evidence or even contrary evidence to God's existence. However, Professor Ewart contends that it was faith in a single Creator God that laid the groundwork for modern science and suggests that science itself offers insights that can enrich faith and devotion. He posits that while some assert that faith in science represents the sole path to truth, such a perspective is misguided, and instead, he asserts that science, when integrated with natural theology, supports Christian faith as a rational and justified belief.

Biography:

Professor Ewart received his BSc and Ph.D. in physics from Queen’s University Belfast before conducting post-doctoral research at the Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College London. He later joined Oxford University's Physics Department as a lecturer and held prestigious fellowships at institutions worldwide. Professor Ewart served as Executive Chairman of Christians in Science from 2019 and subsequently directed the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion in Cambridge before retiring. He now holds the title of Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford.

Join the meeting via Microsoft Teams. We look forward to your participation in this thought-provoking discussion on the intersection of faith and science.
