Dr. Charles H. Malik has many significant contributions on both the Lebanese and the international level, including co-authoring the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. To highlight Malik’s achievements and the values that informed them, The Institute of Lebanese Thought at NDU has partnered with Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) to launch the “Dr. Charles Malik: The Human Rights Legacy of Lebanon” online conference on November 4, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., to highlight Malik’s achievements and values.

The Speakers

Dr. George F. Sabra: "Charles Malik the Teacher"

Dr. George F. Sabra is the President of the Near East School of Theology, and is the Professor of Systematic Theology there. He is the author, editor and translator of several books and articles in the fields of Theology, Ecumenism, Middle Eastern Christianity and Christian-Muslim Dialogue. One of his edited books in Arabic is Charles Malik. Lebanon’s Role in the Making of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

 

Rev. Dr. Habib Badr: "Charles Malik the Mentor"

Dr. Habib Badr has been teaching church history at the Near East School of Theology in Beirut, Lebanon, since 1980, and has served as a pastor of the National Evangelical Church of Beirut since. His areas of interest and research are American Protestant Missionary Activity in the Near East, and he has edited and published a massive book under the title Christianity: A History In The Middle East.

H.E. Dr. Farid el Khazen: " Against the Current: Charles Malik the Philosopher-Diplomat"

H.E. Dr. Farid el Khazen has been the ambassador of Lebanon to the Holy See for the past two years. Prior to that, he served as a lawmaker in the Lebanese parliament for more than a decade, and he comes from an academic background, where he was the chairperson of the political studies department at the American University of Beirut. Ambassador El Khazen’s authored books include The Breakdown of the State in Lebanon, 1967-1976 published by IB Taurus.

 

Dr. Samuel Moyn: "Charles Malik and Personalist Human Rights"

 

Dr. Samuel Moyn is both a professor of jurisprudence and a professor of history at Yale University. He has authored several books in the fields of European intellectual history and human rights history, including The Last Utopia: Human Rights in History. His most recent books are Christian Human Rights and Not Enough: Human Rights in an Unequal World. Professor Moyn is also a fellow of the new Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and currently working on a book on the origins of humane war.
