IOM Regional Representative of the Middle East Visits LERC

Thursday, 30th October 2008

Dr. Shahidul Haque, International Organization for Migration’s Regional Representative for the Middle East, visited LERC accompanied by Mr. Othman Belbeisi, Officer in Charge, and Ms. Cosette Maiky, Consultant and Project Assistant, both of IOM Beirut Office.

The visit took place at the request of Dr. Haque, who is familiarizing himself with organizations, institutes, universities and government ministries and departments in the Middle East which deal with migration.

Dr. Haque receives LERC publications. Left to right: Ms. Maiky, Mr. Belbeisi, Dr. Haque, Ms. Hourani, Dr. Karam (Oct 2008).

Dr. Haque was interested to learn about NDU in general and LERC in particular and to establish contact for future cooperation. Dr. Haque’s objective is to bridge the gap between field work and academia as it relates to migration in the Middle East.

The meeting was followed by a quick tour of LERC premises, the Lebanese Emigration Archive and Database (LEAD) and the Lebanese Migration University Museum at NDU.

Dr. Haque and the IOM Beirut team showed keen interest in LERC’s operation and together plan to start cooperation in the next few weeks.
