Program Overview

This sustainability and innovation summer program in Lebanon provides an immersive introduction to civil and environmental engineering. Through hands-on experiments, engaging activities, competitions, and guest speakers, students will explore key concepts in sustainability and innovation within the engineering field.

Participants will engage in activities such as analyzing recyclable materials, water quality testing, advanced surveying techniques, and structural engineering challenges. The program aims to provide an enriching educational experience that not only deepens students' understanding of environmental engineering but also promotes NDU as a leading institution for STEM education in Lebanon.

This program is an excellent opportunity to learn about sustainability in engineering and gain practical experience in tackling real-world engineering challenges. 

 

Futuristic Concrete: Toward Sustainability

Day 1 Activity Time
Arrival and Lebanese breakfast 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Faculty presentation on the innovative use of green recyclable materials in concrete mixes 10:00 a.m. – 10:25 a.m.
Formation of student groups and selection of materials 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Concrete mixing activity 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Wrapping up and labeling of concrete cylinders for each group 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Fountain of Youth: Testing Your Own Water

Day 2 Activity Time
Arrival 10:00 a.m.
Faculty presentation on water quality for drinking and irrigation 10:00 a.m. – 10:25 a.m.
Formation of student groups; each group brings a water sample from home for testing 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Water quality testing activity 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Summary of water quality findings and distribution of “Fountain of Youth” certificates 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

3D Engineering

Day 3 Activity Time
Arrival 10:00 a.m.
Faculty presentation on 3D printing advancements in engineering 10:00 a.m. – 10:25 a.m.
Live demonstration of Bambu A1 3D printing 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Building competition using popsicle sticks 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Announcement of winners and distribution of “3D Engineering” certificates 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

In the Sky

Day 4 Activity Time
Arrival 10:00 a.m.
Faculty presentation on surveying advancements and drone technology 10:00 a.m. – 10:25 a.m.
Formation of student groups and live drone demonstration 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Scanning competition using Total Station to measure known heights 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Announcement of competition results and distribution of “In the Sky” certificates 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Future Builders 

Day 5 Activity Time
Arrival 10:00 a.m.
Faculty presentation on Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) construction 10:00 a.m. – 10:25 a.m.
Formation of student groups and transfer to activity location 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Speed competition: Building a CMU wall and testing the concrete cylinders prepared on Day 1 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Announcement of results and distribution of “CMU” and “Concrete Cylinder” certificates 12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Closing Ceremony: Recognition of students who collected the most certificates, with goody bags for the winners 1:00 p.m.

Participants 

  • Open to students between the ages of 12 and 15.
  • Priority will be given to students with high academic performance.

 

Outcomes for Participants

By the end of the program, participants will: 
  • Experience civil engineering through practical activities in a supportive environment.
  • Strengthen interest in STEM disciplines while developing problem-solving skills.
  • Gain real-world engineering experience through expert mentorship.

  • Elie Lahoud is a Senior Laboratory Technician at Notre Dame University-Louaize, Lebanon.

 

Certificate of Attendance

All participants will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance on the final day of the program, distributed by the Faculty of Engineering.


Fees and Registration 

Total Cost: USD 150.
Non-refundable registration fee: USD 30.
