ENCOURAGING ACTIVE LIFESTYLE BY PUBLIC OPEN SPACE DESIGN

The active lifestyle as an important factor of quality of life, health and wellbeing requires the possibility of using different public open spaces on a day-to-day basis, not only related to leisure, but as part of everyday routine, travel and educational processes. Key factors for enabling and attracting such use are good accessibility and quality of public open space, its appropriate design and equipment, size, orderliness and safety.

In the workshop we will shortly present the programme »Going out to stay healthy” (Expert Basis for Spatial Planning of Green Areas) aimed at promoting physical activity of citizens, which was co-financed by the Slovenian Ministry of Health in the framework of a programme addressing the nutrition and physical activity for health in the period 2017- 2019, and is part of the national efforts for more movement and healthier food. Its purpose is to stimulate the planning and development of towns and settlements in Slovenia for active and healthy lifestyles for citizens of all ages and social groups. In order to provide an integrated and comprehensive approach, diverse aspects of public open space planning, renovation and management were interlinked with aspects of sustainable mobility.

After the presentation, we will visit Severni mestni park – Navje (Northern City Park – Navje), located north of Ljubljana’s main train station. We will walk to and through the park to check and discuss its accessibility and how its conception and design may support the active lifestyle for inhabitants of that part of Ljubljana.

The workshop will be led by Ina Šuklje Erjavec (UIRS).
