The Common Ground Film Festival 2009 was hosted by the Faculty of Humanities at NDU-SC on October 5 and 6, 2009. The two-day event was organized in collaboration with the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. NDU-SC was chosen to be the first university among many prominent ones where the film festival would circulate.
The event, which is entitled “Rethinking Memory”, featured movies and documentaries that shed light on different eras in the history of mankind. The movies focused on times of war and oppression and promoted a possibility for dialog, peace and reconciliation between conflicting parties and people on opposite camps through the remedy found in facing the “truth” no matter how horrible it is and then working on the difficult “reconciliation”. They also shed light on the fact that modern conflicts are threatening and targeting more often than not the children, who are affected the most. Movies about Beirut and the Lebanese civil war were also featured, and the students showed extreme interest in these specific movies and had a lot to say during the 30 minute discussion period!
The most important outcome of the film festival was the open discussion and the free exchange of ideas between the students and the guests.
