The Faculty of Humanities with the cooperation of the Department of English, Translation, and Education, at Notre Dame University, is pleased to announce its First Secondary School Student Competition in the fields of English and Translation.
Purposes
- To offer secondary school students interested in English Language and Literature and in Translation the opportunity to share their linguistic and literary talents.
- To create a platform where talented students can compete and exhibit those skills in public on the stages of Notre Dame University, Issam Fares Hall.
- To enable secondary students to publish selected works in university publications and journals.
- To magnify the significance of these fields on the professional and artistic levels.
- To financially help skilled and talented students pursue their dreams of proper university education in the areas of English and Translation at NDU.
Competitions and Conditions
- Poetry Competition: Students are invited to write original poems in English; poems should be minimum 15, maximum 75 verse lines. Students may write about almost anything of concern to them and in any poetic form (traditional or modern forms). Teachers are invited to read their students’ submissions before they are sent electronically (Word doc. Attachment) to Dr. Naji Oueijan (Email: noueijan@ndu.edu.lb) before February 20, 2008.
- Translation from Arabic into English Competition: Interested students will be invited to come to NDU on February 20, 2008, at 4:00 pm, in Exam Hall III, to translate one business or scientific text and one literary text. They will be given a period of one hour for each text (Two hours in all); and they may use their own dictionaries (Electronic or Printed).
Screening
- Students’ poetry will be screened twice: once by a jury including specialized NDU professors and representative teachers of the schools concerned; selected students will then read their poetry in public during March 2008 (The date will be announced later) on an NDU stage, during which a second screening will be carried out by a jury composed of university professors and professionals in the concerned field.
- Students’ translations will be screened by a jury composed of NDU professors and professionals in the concerned field.
Prizes
First Prize: 1,920,000 L.L. (Equivalent to 6 credits) offered as a discount during the first semester after registration at NDU in English or Translation. Acknowledgement Certificates and publication of the poems and translated texts in an NDU publication.
Second Prize: 1,280,000 L.L. (Equivalent to 4 credits) offered as a discount during the first semester after registration at NDU in English or Translation. Acknowledgement Certificates and publication of the poems and translated texts in an NDU publication.
Third Prize: 960,000 L.L. (Equivalent to 3 credits) offered as a discount during the first semester after registration at NDU in English or Translation. Acknowledgement Certificates and publication of the poems and translated texts in an NDU publication.
Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Prizes: Acknowledgement Certificates and publication of the poems and translated texts in an NDU publication.
