Whoever thought that taking an Arabic course at NDU-SC would lead to a big theatrical production in support of the community? The students themselves were surprised when Dr. Salma Abdallah, course instructor, told them that they would be presenting a play, written by famous Syrian poet and playwright Mohammad Al Maghout and entitled Kharej Al Sareb (or Outside the Squad) as their final project.
Preparations for the play were being done throughout the term. The students practiced their roles, memorized their parts, prepared the wardrobe and found the theater. They were ready!
On Tuesday, May 23, 2017, in the presence of Ms. Dalida Ayach, wife of famous singer, Ramy Ayach, as well as a host of instructors, NDU-SC administrators and Ayach Al Toufoula officials, the students presented their play on the Fakhr Al-Deen Theater in Baakleen – El Shouf. Their performance was exceptional and they were heavily applauded. The proceeds of the play went to the Ayach Al Toufoula, children’s foundation which supports children with life threatening diseases.
Father Hanna Tayar, Director of NDU-Shouf Campus, expressed his pride in the students and congratulated them on their performance. Emphasizing their excellence, Fr. Tayar noted that the students had come from different majors and none of them had a background in theater. “This is an exceptional learning experience,” he said, “not only did the students learn through application and fun but they also supported a worthy cause.” Fr. Tayar thanked Dr. Abdallah for bringing Arabic language and literature to life and he thanked the attendees for their presence.
The event ended with a small toast in celebration of the students’ success.
