The Department of Students Activities at the Office of Student Affairs, Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), organized on Monday, September 19, 2016, “International Day of University Sport (IDUS),” as proclaimed by UNESCO in collaboration with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) in the presence of UNESCO representative Mrs. Seiko Sugita and NDU Vice-President for Finance Fr. Bechara Khoury.
In attendance were leading figures in the Lebanese sporting world, such as Jean Abdel Nour, Lebanon men’s national basketball team captain and Al-Riyadi player; Nadim Souaid, Homenetmen basketball team captain; Sevag Demerjian, former Lebanese swimming champion; Miguel Martinez, captain of Notre Dame de Louaize basketball club; Alig Tabakian, former player at Homenetmen; in addition to Jennifer Ammouri, women’s basketball player at Antranik.
During the event, Mrs. Sugita stated that the IDUS aims at promoting community development. She highlighted the importance of the collaboration between NDU and UNESCO and hoped for a more sustainable relationship in the future.
NDU Dean of Students Mrs. Joyce Menassa encouraged NDU faculty, staff, and students to partake in the event, which included various sports activities.
The main aim of the IDUS is to reinforce the importance of sports in universities and to strengthen the role of universities in the community, as responsible actors for consolidating and developing quality physical and sport education for the benefit of the wider public.
