The course critically examines the role of advertising and its effects on the individual and society within the larger social, cultural, political, economic, and global contexts. Advertising is investigated as a central component in the capitalist economy and a cultural driving force that affects and is affected by norms and attitudes. Advertising campaigns and their implications in the modern world are explored as sites for the negotiation and construction of identity, nationality, faith, belongingness, gender, and ethnicity.
