WORKSHOPS


INTER-UNIVERSITY WORKSHOPS PRECEDING THE CITY STREET2 CONFERENCE

Notre Dame University Louaize (NDU), the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design (FAAD), the Department of Architecture will collaborate with other universities in and outside Lebanon and will conduct a series of student workshops related to the CS2 theme. These inter-university workshops will address the role of streets in contested areas, and streets as border conditions. Students from the following majors will participate in the workshops: architecture, urban design, interior architecture, and landscape design. The workshops involve mainly third and fourth year students. The workshops will take place in Winter 2015-2016, Spring 2016, and beginning of Winter 2016-2017 semesters. The students’ work resulting from the workshops will be exhibited during the three days of the conference and will be documented on the conference website. URBAN STREET WORKSHOP

Notre Dame University Louaize (NDU), the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design (FAAD), the Department of Architecture will collaborate with both the Departments of Design and of Media Studies, through an urban street workshop that deals mainly with the contextual design of urban street furniture. The workshop involves first and second year students from different majors who will design, execute and install custom-made urban furniture on a given street. The workshop will take place in Winter 2015-2016 and Spring 2016. The entire process will be documented, filmed, and exhibited during the three days of the conference, and will be documented on the conference website. FASHION WORKSHOP

Notre Dame University Louaize (NDU), the Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design (FAAD), the Department of Design will be launching a fashion design workshop in the Winter 2015-2016, and Spring 2016 semesters. Students from the second and third year of the fashion design major will be participating. The workshop address fashion in 20 year intervals related to traditional Lebanese street wear starting in the 1880s and until 2015. Students will review the process of wear evolution and will implement new various reinterpretations of outfits with a projection to the future. The workshop is experimental and will showcase samples of the cosmopolitan puzzle of the culture in the Lebanese society linked with trendy and contrast in street wear, such as chador and miniskirts. A selection of outfits will be exhibited during the three days of the conference and will be documented on the conference website. Further information on the workshops is available HERE.

DEFRAGMENTING AND ACTIVATING PUBLIC SPACES IN UNSTABLE URBAN SETTINGS

The Faculty of Architecture, Art and Design at the Notre Dame University – Louaize will host the first meeting of the AESOP Thematic Group for Public Spaces and Urban Cultures (AESOP TG PSUC) in Beirut, Lebanon. This meeting launches the new thematic series: Unstable Geographies – Dislocated Publics, with its four sub-themes:
• City, refugees, and migration
• Fragmented social fabric – individualised patterns of consumption
• The decline of national politics – Resurgence of the urban political
• Change of perspective – worlding urban studies

The series aims to address current issues related to public spaces common to cities globally, from an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective, while engaging a variety of actors and stakeholders. The purpose of this meeting, organized in parallel to the City Street2 Conference, is to unfold themes under the title of the series within the local and unstable context of Beirut.
