The main areas of interest of Youssef Kamal El-Hage encompass, on the one hand, the scientific work of Albert Einstein together with the history and epistemology of modern physics and recent classical physics, and, on the other hand, the social doctrine of the Catholic Church, the theory and observance of human rights, the national and international Christian-Muslim dialogue, and the national and international ecumenical concordance. El-Hage's most recent book (2004) was an extensive study, with a translation into Arabic, of the encyclical Pacem in Terris of Pope John XIII. Another book (1999) was a historical, contextual and conceptual analysis of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948), with a new translation into Arabic. He is currently conducting research in two directions: the epistemological and philosophical significance of Albert Einstein's scientific work, and the impact of the social doctrine of the Church on the promotion of Christian-Muslim understanding and the ecumenical dialogue. He was a main framer and appointed expert of the Maronite Patriarchal Synod of 2003-2006, for the final proceedings of which he contributed two important documents. In his capacity as “consultor” to the pontifical “Commission for Religious Relations with Muslims” affiliated to the “Pontifical Commission for Interreligious Dialogue” (2000-2010), and as catholic member of the “Joint Working Group” between the Catholic Church and the Word Council of Churches (2006-2013), he is regularly and actively engaged in the promotion of Christian-Muslim convivence and Christian unity at the international level and has contributed many studies in these fields. He is presently a main contributor in the team officially entrusted with the translation of the seminal Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church into Arabic, and is also actively working on the publication of the complete works of the late Lebanese philosopher Kamal Youssef El-Hage.
